When a skill description says that the target will be afflicted with a certain condition but does not list a length of time in the description, how long does it last?

Example #1:

Eruption - Spell
Cause an eruption at target foe's location. For 5 seconds, foes near this location are struck for 5-28 earth damage each second. When Eruption ends, foes in the area of effect are blinded.

Example #2:

Searing Heat - Spell
Cause searing heat at target foe's location. For 5 seconds, foes near this location are struck for 5-24 fire damage each second. When Searing Heat ends, enemies in the area of effect are set on fire. This spell causes exhaustion.

Iczer, it will last for 5 seconds. So in this case if you cast eruption and it does 10 earth damage each second for 5 seconds you will do a total of 50 damage. As for the blinding I believe that is also 5 seconds. The same goes for searing heat. I only started playing this so I may be wrong, but from my spells I was casting last night that is the way it seemed to work for me.
If I am wrong, please someone correct me.
